Description Technical Specs
Features a 303 Stainless Steel Shaft for ultimate corrosion protection and increased power output. The shaft also features a standard thread size of 5/8 x 18 threads per inch and KEYWAY for easy adaptation to your project.

It has a 5mm x 5mm x 12mm keyway in the shaft in order to make custom adaptations easier to apply. Using the key will ensure that a counterclockwise rotation will not loosen the shaft nut. It will also make it easier to use a lovejoy, etc. The pulley and spacers still need to be sandwiched between the shaft nut and front spacer. Failure to do so will result in damage to the PMA.

All WindBlue DC-520 and DC-540 Alternators are equipped with a 3-phase External Rectifier Output pigtail. This small black connector on the back of the unit allows you to run less costly 3-conductor wire to your battery location instead of large heavy battery cables. Once at the battery location the 3-phase power is fed into an External Rectifier(sold separately) and converted to DC for connection to the battery.

Note:WindBlue External Rectifier output equipped alternators can still be connected for DC output by using the battery terminal on the back of alternator, however, only one output should be connected to your batteries at a time. The other should be left unconnected.

WARNING: The 3-phase External Rectifier output connector DOES NOT make your alternator a “Grid-Tie” unit so don’t try to wire the leads into the fuse box of your house as death, fire, and destruction will likely result !!

The DC-540 Model is perfect for use as a wind generator in areas that experience average winds of 5-15 MPH. This Model Reaches 12 Volts at 130 RPM. The chart below represents actual output on a test stand. Voltage readings were recorded with the circuit open (No Load) while Amperage was recorded with the output shorted (Max Load). Your system setup will determine what output you will see in the “real world”. For example, a dead battery will pull much more current similar to the shorted output reading than will a fully charged battery. Also, the voltage will rise until it meets the voltage of your battery and then level off as the battery is “absorbing” the excess voltage as it charges. The output is unregulated. You should be sure and run a 20 or 30 amp fuse on the output to prevent damage to the unit if your load becomes excessive. Also, consider using a charge regulator so your batteries don’t become overcharged. On our test stand with a 12 Volt battery connected the PMA produced 18 Amps at 2000 RPM.

It apparently is set on milliamps so he is actually getting 3.2 amps, 48 volts.

For use as a direct drive wind generator, select a fast set of blades and you should start charging a 12 volt battery setup in about 6 mph winds. This unit passes the 12 volt mark at just 130 RPM. The “Hyper-Spin" rotor is a good choice. Many other websites offer good rotor designs and even plans for rotors if you would like to build your own, just make sure it has a 17mm hub to fit a standard Delco alternator shaft.

This is a great PMA. It works as advertised and will even power a 9 volt boombox radio by turning a hand crank about 1 revolution per second. One note of caution: Do not plan on using the AC output at 12 volts with a 1:10 transformer since the frequency is only about 18 Herz at 12 volts, not nearly high enough to work.

Can this alternator spin clockwise/counterclockwise, and still produce electrical charge in both directions? I am connecting it to a battery. What else do I need to operate it this way?  ANSWER: Yes you can operate it in either a clockwise or counter/clockwise direction.

Getting to know the DC-540 August 4, 2014

I bought mine several ago to play with a VAWT idea I have. While the PMA worked perfectly at that time, it came with a 17mm steel rotor shaft that I had a difficult time machining the nut which would connect the center shaft with the PMA. Once I found WindBlue has provided a replacement rotor with a stainless steel shaft and standard fine threads, I ordered one and the project is off of the back burner. Unfortunately when replacing rotor I managed to brake 2 of the stators wire leads. They just don't work the same when soldered back together. Fortunately they offer replacement parts for that as well. I suppose my next review will be on the stator I just ordered.

I am very happy with the results of your Low Wind 540, after many months of experimenting on various ways to come up with the perfect 12 Volt charging system for low wind, I gave up and choose to try your 540. I took it from the box and went straight to my Volt tester. I couldn't believe the output by only turning it with my fingers, on the 15 volt scale I was getting a half scale reading of 7.5 volts. This is truly the setup for battery systems of any type, it does everything it is advertised to do and more. Thank you WindBlue for this product. (Very Good People To Deal With)
I also bought the NC25A 12V Controler that will work very nicely with my system to prevent battery overcharge.
